Topeka police are investigating the discovery of a man's body early this morning in Oakland. They were called shortly before 6 am to the 11 hundred block of NorthEast Kellum Avenue near Billard Airport. The man's body was discovered in the yard of a house. Police are trying to determine how the man died.

A would-be burglar caught breaking into a west Topeka home is in the hospital this morning along with one of the residents of the house. Police were called to the house in the 61 hundred block of SW 25th street--just west of Wanamaker Road-- at about 11:30 last night. One of the residents told them they discovered the burglar ainside the house and had restrained him. Police say the burglar sustained wounds from a fight with the residents and was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital with non life threatening injuries. One of the residents was also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Osage County authorities have seized a quarter of a million dollars of suspected drug money during a traffic stop late morning yesterday on I-35. One man was arrested and booked into he Osage County jail.

Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline's campaign manager says a fundraising request made in the name of an anti-abortion group was a ``terrible mistake.'' She says the gaffe was not a problem for the campaign. But says it could hurt the Ohio based anti-abortion group because of its tax-exempt status, it's barred from endorsing candidates and could potentially lose the exemption.

Two Republican candidates in the 2nd Congressional District race are arguing over out-of-state fundraising. Republican challengers Lynn Jenkins and Jim Ryun have been critical of each other for turning to out-of-state sources for funding. The winner of the GOP race will take on Nancy Boyda in the general election.


Washburn University is being asked to make the same budget cuts as the Kansas Board of Regents schools - seven percent over the next two school years. Washburn president Dr. Jerry Farley says the first task will be to gather input about the best way to reduce spending.
Farley says there's no doubt that some painful decisions will have to be made, including the possibility of a tuition increase. The goods news is that schools are being given early warning about the reductions.

A raid on an Osage County escort buisness called "Foxy Lady's lands a 59 year Topeka woman in jail --suspected of prostitution. The Osage County attorney's office says 59 year old Carol Breuer was arrested at the buisness..located north of Carbondale on Old Highway 75 near the Shawnee-Osage County line. Yesterday's arrest capped what prosecutor Brandon Jones called a "lengthy investigation" involving state and local law enforcement. Breuer was later released on her own recognizance.


Its been under construction for two years, plans have been announced for the grand re-opening of the Topeka Boulevard bridge. The bridge will open to vehicle traffic at 6 AM on Monday, August 4th. The bridge will be open for pedestrian traffic only during a six hour long celebration which is planned for Sunday, August 3rd.
The event will be held from 4-10 p.m., with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m. During the celebration, the bridge will be open to pedestrian traffic only. At about 4:30 p.m., attendees will be asked to assemble at either the north or south side and will march to the center of the bridge (it will be about a 10-minute walk), joining both sides together for a brief ceremony. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, as limited seating will be available.


-Streets surrounding the bridge will be closed for the celebration beginning at 4 p.m. On the south side of the bridge, Topeka Blvd will be closed at 3rd street and on the north side, Gordon to Morris will be closed.
